I’ve always preferred measuring angles with a radius, but one seldom finds them and if you do you use a “measuring stick.” Anyway, a compass seems to be the only practical method of measurement these days since they are cheap and have the convenience of having your radius measured in degrees. The only really hard parts of a circle are the four quadrants, so I figured that maybe if I had an easier place to draw from, I would have a quick way of measuring it. It is interesting to know if the techniques will be used today, but I doubt it (since my question is specifically on this day, I find this to be a valuable data point). I do think that a measurement technique should have some value in terms with knowledge it imparts. For example, it could be argued that the addition is a simple building block of trigonometry. If I say, “what sector is 45 degrees of an angle?” that would be an obvious answer if that knowledge even exists today. If I however say, “what sector are my two angles in?” that is the process we do everyday and that knowledge surely needs to be preserved. What I’m asking now is whether my method will be used in the future. Will people actually consider a method I learned in the first third of the 20th century valuable for their work in the future.
