How do W.D. Gann Arcs work?

How do W.D. Gann Arcs work? When done a bunch of times, how does that look? That’s a really good question. Typically an “arc” is the same or greater than the thickness of the bar stock into which you cut it, so we don’t want them to be too thick to minimize any bow spreading. Normally we like this them wide enough to allow about 3/4″-1″ of bow spreading and that’s usually OK. In the interest of consistency, having 2 or more thicknesses at a given angle is just asking for trouble so I do like to keep it shallow right up to the edge. I’ll be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever done more than three with a shallow angle but I can make an arc that’s maybe half-an-inch thick from 4 to 8 feet in long so that’s all it takes right? I just did the classic roll on about a next radius arc and that was about 20″ long (the arch was the default radius – nothing added). Not real consistent but that’s a size that should work, both because of the diameter of the blade and the height of the arc being pretty small. Its been three years since I’ve built anything arch but I am confident that the width dimension of mine was consistently closer to that number. In this case, if the diameter was roughly correct, it would be the width of the stock where they make the joint.

They have three parts: Step 1 – Create a grid of your lines and dimensions; Step 2 – Decide from where your top, middle, and bottom of the pack lies in your drawing; Step 3 – Scale the arcs to size. The most important thing to remember is that the end result should have the outer contour of an entire picture: NOT just a small circle. Your finished arc lines would look like this: The top and bottom of the arc are drawn from A1 along the horizontal center line of the grid onto the line you will be drawing and ending at A16 along the bottom of the grid.
